Day 3 - Mungo to Hall's Gap

I am asleep, but my face is numb with cold. I am awakened by “Mum, Mum? I need the toilet. Now!” It’s dark and bitterly cold, a quick trip to the fetid long drop was not the way I wanted to start my day! Oh the joys of children! We arrive back at our tent shivering, find my watch and discover that it is 5am, no getting the little Miss back to sleep now, she always has been an early riser. She jumps into my sleeping bag to warm up, a tight squeeze, but a warm arrangement, and we chatter away while the sun comes up. Before long the birds began to sing their morning songs and the sun appears on the horizon.

Day 2 - Menindee to Mungo

I am deep asleep, warm and cosy in my sleeping bag, a chirpy “Good Morning Mummy” brings me back to reality. I open my eyes and the first thing I see is the milky waters of Lake Panamaroo not 10 feet from my toes, glowing pale pink in the early dawn, small wavelets slapping against the shore in a soothing rhythm, birds whistle sweet tunes, I could sleep for several more hours in these conditions, but it’s not going to happen.

Solo camping in QLD goes viral on Youtube

Browsing youtube on this particular day I noticed a thumbnail that grabbed my attention. Solo camping in the rain. The title didn’t sound all too appealing, and the thumbnail wasn’t much better, although a beautifully composed and taken shot it was. A man sitting behind his jet black Jeep with his dog loyal by his side taking shelter from the rain. 5 million views later....

Iconic High Country Huts

Inspired by stories of survival and adventure faced by mountain cattlemen and women, we had made the commitment to experience for ourselves some of the Victorian High Country’s most iconic huts. I was hoping to understand the feeling of remoteness, loneliness and personal hardships faced by these pioneers by standing in the doorway of these huts and gazing out, as they would have, at views that may not have changed in over one hundred years.

Visiting the Sapphire Coast

There is a whole lot to do and see around the Merimbula area and further down the Sapphire Coast! After travelling to this beautiful town for many years (10 if we are counting), we still found new things to do, see and explore on our trip for the week.

Day 1 - Cassilis to Menindee Lakes

I focus my eyes on the green glow of the alarm clock, 4.03am. I swear I have looked at that clock every fifteen minutes since 2am. I give up! I swing out of bed and head off to awaken my travel partners, my parents Julie and Bob whom travelled down from their home on the Darling Downs, Qld, yesterday, and my 5 year old daughter Alexandra.

What to pack? The essentials

This is always an important one that’s for sure! Signing a contract for 6, 8 or 12 weeks with only one suitcase can cause a bit of anxiety (for the majority of us haha), but here is a handy list:
